NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly PCT worked in partnership with Beehive Solutions to provide a weekend TIA clinic at The Royal Cornwall Hospital from February 2010 to the end of December 2014.

The weekend service allowed the Trust to provide a seven-day per week TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack) clinic, as a key measure to reduce the risk of patients having a full Stroke

The service provided in partnership with Beehive Solutions operated from the RoyalCornwall Hospital each Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Beehive Solutions provides the Vascular Sonographers and ultrasound imaging & reporting expertise to allow the Trusts own clinicians to assess the severity of a patient’s symptoms and provide early diagnosis and treatment. Such activities are essential to reducing the risk of patients going on to have a full stroke.

Local demand for TIA clinics has grown steadily as a result of the "FAST" public awareness campaign. FAST was launched in 2009 and alerts people to the signs and symptoms of a stroke. Reducing the number of people who suffer a stroke is one of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly’s key objectives as stroke affects around 1,150 local people per year. An additional 1,000 local people per year also suffer a TIA.

Carol Williams, the director of service improvement and professional practice at NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly said: “The opening of the weekend clinics is a major step forward in the treatment and prevention of strokes and shows our commitment to fully implementing the National Stroke Strategy. The local stroke service is going from strength to strength.”

Note: A TIA – sometimes known as a mini stroke - is a brief episode which occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is temporarily cut off. Symptoms may include: difficulty with speech; weakness in the limbs down one side of the body or blindness in one eye. All symptoms resolve within 24 hours, but can be a fore-runner of a full Stroke. Early assessment and intervention is therefore vital.
